What Is Dry Eye?

Dry eye is a term for a group of conditions that occur when your eyes either don’t produce enough tears or produce poor-quality tears that evaporate too quickly. Eyes that don’t produce enough tears account for about 10% of dry eye cases. There are a variety of reasons why this occurs, including:

  • Contact lens wear
  • The aging process
  • Certain medications
  • Medical conditions such as lupus or Sjögren’s syndrome
  • Recent laser eye surgery

The most common reason for dry eye is poor-quality tear composition. Dry eye caused by poor-tear quality is often referred to as evaporative dry eye because your tears lack a sufficient oil layer to slow evaporation.

The 3 layers of your team film include a mucus layer that spreads moisture over the surface of the eye, a water layer to provide hydration, and an oil layer to keep the water layer from evaporating too quickly. Common reasons for evaporative dry eye include:

Our Approach to Dry Eye Treatment

Since dry eye is so common, we include dry eye screenings during all our teen and adult eye exams. For all of our patients over the age of 12, we perform LipiScan meibomian gland imaging to help us screen for meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). This can help us detect dry eye even if you don’t experience symptoms, allowing us to catch the problem before it causes damage to your eyes.

Once we have assessed your eyes for MGD and symptoms of dry eye, we’ll work on building a customized treatment plan. Dry eye may be a common problem, but there is no one-size-fits-all solution. We offer a variety of take-home and in-office treatments that will be tailored to your unique situation.

Take-Home Treatments

Fortifeye Super Omega-3 Max is a supplement designed to support your tear film and reduce inflammation. It offers therapeutic levels of both EPA and DHA that help keep your tear film balanced and healthy. Omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and other nutrients help to raise lactoferrin levels, a protective protein found in tears.

For many people, supplementing with Fortifeye can replace the need for eye drops.

This eye mask helps to relieve blockages in the meibomian glands, allowing the oil they produce to flow and balance the tear film. These masks are anti-bacterial and non-allergenic, washable, reusable, and self-hydrating.

We recommend the Pure & Clean Lid Prep from Vision Source for those dealing with blepharitis, inflammation, and Demodex around the eyes. This soothing cleanser uses hypochlorous acid to provide an effective but gentle clean that helps to reduce inflammation, dryness, and irritation around the eyes.

An effective eyelid cleanser is essential for removing dirt, debris, and Demodex mites from the eye area and restoring comfort.

Energy-Based In-Office Treatments

Energy-based treatments target inflammation and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) to help restore your tear production and provide long-lasting relief for your dry eye symptoms.

We offer different treatment options, including IPL therapy, radiofrequency treatments, and the LipiFlow system, which will be recommended by your optometrist during your dry eye assessment. Many patients include multiple treatments in their regimen, and sometimes at-home methods are recommended as well.

Typically, most patients see an improvement after 4 energy-based treatments, with 2-4 weeks between treatments. Once your symptoms improve, you’ll usually just need a single maintenance session annually to maintain healthy tear production.

The InMode Lumecca intense pulse light (IPL) therapy device uses light pulses to help liquefy oil blockages in the meibomian glands. By clearing these blockages, the production of the oil layer of your tear film will be restored. Additionally, IPL therapy targets inflammation, which can improve tear production and reduce dry eye symptoms.

Beyond dry eye, IPL therapy can also be used to treat styes and chalazia on the eyes. IPL treats this inflammation and clears blockages, returning your eyes to their natural, comfortable state. Patients may also notice some happy side effects, such as reducing the appearance of fine lines and aging around the eyes.

The InMode Forma-I radiofrequency (RF) treatment uses radiofrequency energy waves to gently heat the eyelids and skin around the eyes. This treatment relieves dry eye symptoms caused by blocked or inflamed meibomian glands.

RF treatments can help improve blood flow, reduce inflammation, and stimulate collagen production around the eyes and eyelids. This targets the root cause of your symptoms, restoring your tear production and providing long-term relief from dry eye symptoms.

Following an RF treatment, we often recommend meibomian gland expression, which is done in-office by a trained professional. This step helps to clear out any remaining oil blockages that have been softened during the treatment.

LipiFlow is an in-office procedure that targets MGD. It uses heat and gentle massage to unblock meibomian glands. The treatment is relatively non-invasive.

During the treatment, specially-designed activators are placed on your eyes to protect your corneas. The activators are then heated up to liquefy any blockages, and then a massaging pressure flushes away the debris.

After your LipiFlow treatment, which lasts about 12 minutes, you’ll be able to return to your daily activities without any impact on your vision.
